The office quieted down around noon. I looked up from a phone call and realized every cubicle, every office had emptied to a conference room, where my colleagues had gathered to watch the swearing in ceremony of Barack Obama. We were transfixed, admiring, laughing even with the woman who realized her face was on TV, mouth agape.
The whole speech was a wonderful moment, one of the greatest in my life: the air of unity, of hope, of inspiration enveloping us all. I look forward to the achievements of the next four years, and will pray through whatever failings may come. President Obama is a mortal man: we have no delusions that he is anything else but one of us, doing what he can to help improve our stations, our lot in life. I’m rooting for him: I think, deep down, we all are, because in him, we see ourselves.
